Why Shoyi · Nunawading, Melbourne

Why Shoyi Costs More, and Why It Is Worth It

We are not the cheapest PPF shop in Melbourne and we do not try to be. You are paying us to protect your car, not to damage it during the install. Here is exactly where the money goes.

What you are really paying for

A film is only as good as the install behind it. The cost of a premium job is mostly everything the customer never sees.

A proper facility

A clean, controlled install environment costs money to set up and run, and it is what keeps dust and contamination out from under your film.

Full insurance

We pay around $40,000 a year in insurance so every vehicle left with us is covered against accidents, natural or man-made.

Skilled, in-house staff

Our installers are trained in-house, not contractors. Skill costs more, and it is the difference between a clean finish and knife marks in your paint.

No process cut

Preparation and installation are never shortened, whether the car is ten years old or brand new.

Premium materials

We only use the highest quality film and coatings, so our work is never wasted and you receive what you paid for.

20+ years of craft

Adam is a SunTek and FEYNLAB authorised trainer and installer with over 20 years in PPF, and a 5.0-rated Google review record shown below.

Even a brand-new car is not clean

The rubber seals and panel gaps on a new car still carry dirt, and film that wraps into those gaps traps it.

That is why every car is cleaned thoroughly before any film touches it. On a full-car install, this cleaning and preparation alone typically takes one to two days. It is time the customer never sees on the finished car, and it is one of the first steps cheaper shops skip.

Then comes paint correction where it is needed, because film locks in whatever is on the paint. You can read more on paint correction.

You pay us to protect the car, not damage it

The biggest risk in PPF is an inexperienced installer working a blade near your paint. A knife mark in clear coat cannot be polished out, and it cannot be hidden under the film. Our installers are trained in-house to a high standard precisely so that does not happen, and the insurance we carry exists for the day something outside anyone's control goes wrong.

Cheaper quotes exist for a reason. Something has been cut: the film grade, the preparation, the environment, the installer's experience or the cover behind the work. We would rather be upfront about what is in our price than win a job by leaving things out. See also why the cheapest PPF quote ends up the most expensive.

We stand behind the work for the long term

Our install is backed to outlast the warranty on the film itself. We are in this industry for the long run, not for one sale, and our reputation depends on every owner we have ever looked after. Part of what you pay for is that promise.

It is also why the price is what it is. A shop running on thin margins has little room to honour a claim and every reason to avoid one. We build the cost of looking after you into the job, so we can say yes when it matters.

Do not take our word for it. Come and visit the workshop, see the quality of the work for yourself, and judge the meticulous standard you can expect on your own car. Book a visit.

Four cars at a time, never rushed

We only work on four cars at a time, and a single car can take one to two weeks.

That means we complete fewer cars than a high-volume shop, and that is the point. Every car gets the time its finish deserves, and every car we finish is looked after for life.

Already scratched or damaged by another installer?

We regularly see cars come to us after another installer has scratched the paint or damaged the film. Usually, that traces back to a cheaper job where something was rushed or left out. Some owners pay us to redo the work properly, because it is a waste to pay twice.

Some damage cannot be fixed, such as a cut through the clear coat. Do it once and do it right.

We train the industry

Adam is an accredited SunTek and FEYNLAB trainer. He has taught installers and whole shops across Australia, and we still run training courses today. When other installers learn from us, you can trust the hands working on your car. See the training courses.

Frequently asked questions

Why is PPF so expensive at Shoyi Auto Craft?
Because the price pays for the whole job, not just the film. Shoyi runs a dedicated, clean install facility, carries around $40,000 a year in insurance on every vehicle in its care, employs in-house trained installers rather than contractors, and never cuts a step in preparation or installation. A full-car PPF job needs one to two days of cleaning and prep alone. Published pricing starts at $2,500 for a partial front, $4,500 for a full front and $8,500 for a full car.
Is Shoyi Auto Craft more expensive than other PPF shops in Melbourne?
Often, yes, and deliberately. Shoyi does not compete on being the cheapest. The cost reflects 20+ years of PPF experience, SunTek and FEYNLAB authorised trainer status, a controlled install environment, full insurance cover and premium film. Owners pay to have their car protected, not damaged during the install.
Is a more expensive PPF install actually worth the money?
On a vehicle you care about, usually yes. The common costs of a cheap install are knife marks in the paint, lifted edges, trapped dust and yellowing film, and fixing those costs more than doing it properly the first time. A higher price at a quality shop buys careful preparation, skilled hands, good film and someone accountable if something goes wrong.
What insurance does Shoyi Auto Craft carry on customer vehicles?
Shoyi pays around $40,000 a year in insurance so that every vehicle left in its care is covered against accidents, whether natural or man-made, while it is at the workshop. That cost is built into the price, and it is a cost many lower-priced operators do not carry.
Why does PPF preparation take so long?
Because even brand-new cars arrive with dirt in the rubber seals and panel gaps. Film edges wrapped into those gaps will trap that dirt, so everything is cleaned thoroughly before film goes on. On a full-car install, cleaning and prep typically takes one to two days by itself, before any film is cut or fitted.
Does Shoyi use contractors or in-house installers?
In-house installers, trained by Shoyi. Highly skilled staff cost more, but the biggest risk in this work is an inexperienced installer with a blade near your paint. Experienced, in-house trained installers are how knife marks and rushed edges are avoided.
What film does Shoyi Auto Craft use?
Only premium film and coatings from brands the shop is authorised to train on, including SunTek and FEYNLAB. Cheaper materials would lower the price, but they would also put the reputation of the work at risk, so they are not used.
Does Shoyi back up its PPF work after the install?
Yes, for the long term. Shoyi stands behind its installs for longer than the film manufacturer's own warranty runs, because the business is built on reputation, not on selling one job to one owner. That commitment is part of why the price is higher. A shop running on thin margins has little room to honour a warranty claim. Owners are welcome to visit the Nunawading workshop to see the quality of the work and the standard of finish for themselves.
How many cars does Shoyi work on at once, and how long does a PPF job take?
Shoyi works on only four cars at a time so that nothing is rushed. A full job can take one to two weeks per car, including preparation. That limit is deliberate: it protects the quality of the finish, and every car is looked after for life.
Can Shoyi fix PPF that another installer scratched or damaged?
Often, yes. Owners regularly come to Shoyi after another installer has scratched or damaged their paint or film, and some choose to pay to have the job redone properly. Some damage, such as a knife cut through the clear coat, cannot be repaired at all, which is why doing it once and doing it right costs less in the end.
Does Shoyi train other PPF and tint installers?
Yes. Adam is an accredited SunTek and FEYNLAB trainer and has trained installers and whole shops across Australia. Training courses are still running today, and some of the shops he has taught now operate their own studios.
