What ceramic coating actually does
Ceramic coating is a maintenance system. It bonds to the clear coat and creates a surface that is hydrophobic — water beads and rolls off — and resistant to the dirt and grime that builds up between washes. The practical result is a car that is significantly easier to clean, needs less scrubbing, and holds a deeper gloss for longer.
Swirls build up over time from washing. Every time a car is washed — especially in a car wash tunnel or with a low-quality mitt — fine scratches accumulate in the clear coat. Ceramic coating reduces this by minimising how much dirt bonds to the surface and how much friction the paint is exposed to during cleaning. Over years, that difference is visible.
What ceramic coating does not do
It does not stop stone chips. This is the most common misunderstanding, and it matters because plenty of owners have spent on a coating expecting chip protection that was never there. A stone chip at freeway speed will go through a ceramic coating the same way it goes through bare paint. If chip protection is what you want, that is paint protection film.
It also does not repair existing paint damage. Any swirls, scratches or oxidation on the paint when the coating goes on stay there — permanently, under the coating. When ceramic coating is worth it

For new cars: the earlier a coating goes on, the more of the paint's life it protects. A new car that gets a quality coating in the first few weeks holds a factory-fresh finish that an uncoated car cannot match after three Melbourne winters.

When you might want PPF instead — or both
