New Car PPF Melbourne β€” Why You Should Protect Before the First Drive

The best time to protect a new car is before it gets its first chip. Factory paint is perfect, the surface is clean, and there are no defects to work around. Every kilometre after that is a countdown. Here is why new-car PPF in Melbourne is the smartest spend at delivery β€” and what to actually do.

Why new is the right time

A new car from the dealership has paint in its best possible state β€” no swirls from dealer wash, no chips from the drive home, no light scratches from the first car park. That is the surface worth sealing under film.

Once the first chip lands, the conversation changes. The film still protects everything going forward, but the chip is already there, sealed in. A paint correction before the film goes on can address many surface defects, but a chip that has gone through the clear coat cannot be polished out β€” it can only be touched up, which is a different result from factory paint.

The other reason to move quickly is that new paint is not delicate. There is a common belief that new paint needs to "cure" before film can go on. Modern two-stage basecoat/clearcoat paint is fully cured by the time it leaves the factory. There is no waiting period required for PPF on a brand-new vehicle.

The first chip always comes sooner than you expect

Melbourne's freeways, particularly the Eastern and the Monash, are high-chip environments. Gravel and construction debris, trucks throwing up stone at speed, and the general grit of a major city all contribute. On a new car driving highway speeds, the front bonnet, bumper and guards start accumulating chips within weeks.

Owners who wait often come to us six months in asking why we did not tell them sooner. The honest answer is that the industry is not great at making the case before the damage is done. We are trying to fix that.

What to protect on a new car β€” a practical order

For most new cars, the highest-value protection in order of priority is: front bonnet (centre and leading edge), front bumper, front guards, door mirror backs, door edge guards, and door handle cups. These are the areas that take the overwhelming majority of stone chips and parking damage.

That combination β€” often called a partial front package β€” covers the high-impact areas for a cost that is a fraction of the full vehicle. It is the most popular choice for new-car owners and the one we recommend as a starting point for almost every vehicle.

A full front-end package extends coverage to the A-pillars, rocker sills and rear arch protectors. Full vehicle coverage wraps every panel. On a car you plan to keep for a long time, or one with strong resale value, going further makes financial sense β€” the cost of the film is consistently less than the cost of repainting a chipped bonnet.

Tesla, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes β€” what we see most

Teslas are among the most common new-car PPF jobs we do, and for good reason. Tesla's factory paint is soft by industry standards, which means it chips and scratches more easily than most European paint. The Model 3 and Model Y are particularly high-risk on the front bumper and bonnet. We know exactly where Teslas chip first and how to wrap the panels cleanly, including the areas other installers sometimes rush.

New Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes vehicles are regular arrivals straight from the dealership. Owners picking up a 911, a GLE or an M3 want the paint locked in from day one β€” and those are cars where a chipped bonnet genuinely affects resale value.

We also see a strong flow of new Chinese EVs β€” BYD, Zeekr, Xpeng β€” from owners who understand the value of protecting factory paint early. The soft paint on several of these models makes the case for PPF even more straightforward.

Can the dealer do it?

Some dealers offer PPF through their own network as a delivery add-on. There are two things worth knowing about that.

First, dealer-supplied PPF is almost always marked up significantly. The same film from an independent authorised installer will cost less. Second, the quality of a dealer-referred install varies enormously. Dealers are not installers β€” they outsource the work, and who actually does it depends entirely on which shop they use. Ask specifically which installer does the work, what film is used, and whether the installer is accredited by the film manufacturer.

We have re-done dealer installs. Not because the film was bad, but because the prep and technique did not meet the standard we hold. A bumper that was not properly cleaned before the film went on, edges that were not wrapped correctly. A poor install on a new car is the worst outcome β€” you have paid for protection that does not deliver.

How soon after delivery should you book?

As soon as possible, ideally within the first week. The longer you wait, the more exposure the paint gets. If you know your delivery date, book the PPF appointment to follow it within a few days β€” we can often work around a dealership handover with a day or two of notice.

If the car is coming from interstate or has been sitting at the dealer for a while, let us know. Some delivery cars accumulate more paint defects than others, and we factor in the level of paint correction needed when quoting.

What it costs

New-car PPF pricing follows the same structure as any PPF job: the vehicle size, the coverage level, and the film grade. A partial front package on a medium car starts from $2,800 inc GST in SunTek Reaction, or from $2,500 in FEYNLAB or AutoArmor. A full front package starts from around $4,500. Full vehicle coverage from $8,500 and up depending on the vehicle.

The way to think about it: a respray of a chipped and scratched bonnet on a prestige vehicle in Melbourne runs $1,500 to $3,000 or more, depending on the shop and the severity. PPF done at delivery costs roughly the same as fixing the bonnet later β€” except the bonnet never gets damaged in the first place, and neither do the guards, bumper or mirrors.
