If you have been looking into ceramic coating for your car, there is one thing worth understanding before you spend anything, because it decides whether the money is well spent or wasted. A coating does not fix your paint. It seals whatever is already there. So if your paint is full of fine swirls and marks when it is coated, you have just locked those marks in under a hard, clear layer for years. That is why proper work always goes in a set order, and why the paint correction that comes first is the part that actually makes your car look incredible.
We do this work in Nunawading, a few minutes from Doncaster, Box Hill and Blackburn, and it is some of the most satisfying work we do, because the before and after is night and day.
Paint correction is the machine polishing stage where we remove the fine swirls, wash marks and light scratches that build up in a car's clear coat over time. Under direct light these are the cobwebby circles you see on a bonnet, and they are what make paint look tired even when the colour is fine. Correcting them brings back the depth and the mirror in the finish.
Only once the paint is corrected does coating make sense. A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, slick, water repelling layer bonded to your clear coat. It makes washing easier, helps the paint resist marring, and holds a deep gloss for years. But it is see through and permanent for its service life, so it faithfully preserves exactly what is underneath, flaws and all. Correct first, then coat, and you lock in a finish at its best. Coat a swirled car to save money and you preserve the swirls. The order is not upselling, it is the whole point.
We use Feynlab, and the choice really comes down to how many years you want the protection to last.
There is a dealership pack at around $990, which includes a basic cut and polish before a coating that lasts about three years, a sensible entry point. Feynlab Ceramic V3 at around $1,650 gives you roughly three years. The most popular choice is Feynlab Ceramic Ultra V3 at around $2,200 for about five years, which is the sweet spot of cost and longevity for most owners. And Feynlab Self Heal Plus at around $4,600 pushes service life out to around seven years with self healing properties for light marks. Every Feynlab coating is backed by a warranty and its own serial code, so the protection is registered to your car, not just promised.
In the spirit of only paying for what actually helps, a couple of add ons get pushed that most owners do not need. Interior coating at around $550 is rarely worth it unless you have young kids eating and drinking in the back regularly, a pack of leather wipes does the job for most people. Wheel coating is nice but, honestly, that money is often better spent on a longer lasting paint coating or on heat blocking tint you will feel every day. I would rather tell you that than take the extra.
Owners often ask whether they need ceramic coating or paint protection film. They do different jobs. Film is a physical layer that takes stone chips and scratches so the paint does not, which is why it goes on the front end where the impacts happen. Coating is a chemical layer that makes the whole car easier to clean and hold its gloss, but it will not stop a stone chip. Many owners do film on the vulnerable front and a coating over the rest of the car, so every panel is looked after in the way that suits it. On a visit I can walk you through what makes sense for how you drive.
If you are around Doncaster, Box Hill, Blackburn or anywhere across the eastern suburbs, come by the Nunawading workshop and have a look at corrected panels next to uncorrected ones under proper light. That comparison tells you more than any brochure. Every car is done in house by our own staff, never contractors, by people who take real pride in the finish. Come in for an honest quote with no pressure, and leave knowing exactly what your paint needs and what it does not.
