Car detailing covers a wide range of work, from a basic freshen-up to a full interior and exterior restoration before a sale. Here is what each package involves and what drives the price up or down.
Car detailing is not the same as a car wash. A wash removes surface dirt. Detailing is the thorough cleaning and restoration of the car, inside and out β from the paint and glass to the interior surfaces, leather, carpet and trim.
The range of what counts as a detail is wide. A basic package freshens the car up. A deep clean covers everything that a wash missed. A pre-sale package is a more intensive process that uses correction work to lift the finish before the car goes to market. Prices vary because the work involved is genuinely different.
A basic detail at our Nunawading shop starts from $250. It covers a thorough exterior hand wash and dry, interior vacuum and wipe-down, and glass clean inside and out.
This is the right package for a car that is already well maintained and just needs a regular freshen-up to keep it in good condition. It is not the right package for a car that has not been properly cleaned in a year or that needs the interior brought back from a difficult state.
A full deep clean, inside and out, starts from $450. This covers a more thorough process than the basic wash β proper attention to interior surfaces, trim, door jambs, and any areas that a quick clean skips. It takes 4 to 6 hours on a standard car.
If the car has visible grime buildup on the interior, staining in the carpet, or paint that has not been properly cleaned in a long time, this is the right starting point.
A pre-sale package starts from $650. It is a more intensive process designed to present the car at its best before it goes to market. This typically includes some paint correction work β a cut and polish β to lift the finish back to where it looks properly maintained rather than worn.
A properly detailed car consistently returns more on the sale price than the detail costs. Buyers make snap judgements based on how a car looks, and a car that looks genuinely well cared for commands a premium over one that is just clean.
A dedicated interior steam clean starts from $120. Steam cleaning is effective at sanitising upholstery and removing odours and embedded grime without harsh chemicals. It is a worthwhile standalone if the exterior is already in good shape.
Leather seats require a different approach β a dedicated leather wash and condition keeps the material supple and prevents cracking. If the leather is showing early signs of wear or dryness, a proper leather clean and condition is a much cheaper fix than letting it deteriorate to the point of needing repair or replacement.
Car size makes a significant difference. Detailing a large SUV or van takes more time and product than a small hatchback. Final quotes are always based on the specific vehicle.
Condition is the other major variable. A car that has been maintained regularly takes less time and effort to detail than one that has been neglected for years. If the interior has heavy staining or the paint has serious contamination buildup, the work required β and therefore the price β goes up accordingly. We give an honest estimate at consultation based on the actual state of the car.
A car that has paint protection film or ceramic coating needs a maintenance wash that respects those surfaces. The products and methods used on standard paint can degrade film and coatings over time if they are not appropriate for the material.
We regularly look after cars with PPF and ceramic packages. A proper maintenance wash on a protected car keeps the film performing at its best and the coating's hydrophobic properties intact. If your car is coated or wrapped, the detail is part of making the protection last.
